I’ve been producing the ALC Network Annual Reports since 2018, and it’s interesting to see how the focus and key functions of the network have changed over time.
The process of assembling the reports typically starts in the fall, when I put out a call for content and photo contributions from facilitators across the network. I used to gather and organize all the information I could, but now I ask that everyone who wants to be included send me a page (or a few pages) to be incorporated as is. This has been much simpler on my end, which hopefully will make it easier for someone else to step in and keep producing reports if and when I can’t. It also solves a personal unease I was starting to feel, wanting to represent projects accurately but not having the ability to really get to know more and more of them as the network grew. Having facilitators design their own pages for the report lets them tell their own stories, which feels much better.
A confession: I often give kids and families deadlines that are a few days before I actually need something. Just because life happens and sometimes that buffer room is needed. I do the same when I ask for Annual Report contributions, and the report is better for having that built-in extra time every year. Although the flip side is that these pages often don’t get translated before the report is published, because there just isn’t enough time. Whatever language the pages are in when I receive them is the language they get published in, at least initially.
I pull all the budget, membership, and resource download numbers as close to the report release date as I can, to try to cover most of the year’s data. There’s usually a slow build to a pretty focused week in December when I finalize these numbers, check the translation progress, incorporate the contributor pages, and update all the copy that needs updating. Then I let the document sit for a week before giving it one last review — the break being so I can see it with fresh eyes and hopefully catch any problems more quickly — and then sending it out.
Here’s the 2025 English version of the report!
